Strategic Positioning

Respondents were asked to respond to a question about Strategic Positioning. The question was:

The community of Smithville is a unique small community on the edge of a major Midwest metropolis. In addition, it is close to a major airport that gives direct and easy access to the nation and the world. What do you think should be the ‘strategic positioning’ of the community over the coming years?

Scale: 1 = ‘The community protects the small-town insular feel and focuses on retaining more traditional values’; 10 = ‘The community leverages it proximity to the airport and Kansas City metropolis, positioning itself as a vibrant small community that is connected to the world’.

Key things to note:

  • In the initial community survey, the concept of protecting the ‘small-town’ feel was often referenced. However, as the conversation has deepened in the Think-Tank and the community engagement sessions, the majority of people lean towards the end of the continuum that is defined as ‘The community leverages it proximity to the airport and Kansas City metropolis, positioning itself as a vibrant small community that is connected to the world’
  • The community is in rapid transition from a small satellite rural community to being more integrated into the Kansas City metropolis. This change requires careful thinking about future strategic positioning.
