Dan is best known for having combined land use and transportation strategies under the banner, “Don’t build transportation through communities; build communities through transportation.
In 2001, Time Magazine honored Dan as one of the six most important civic innovators in the world. That same year the Transportation Research Board made Dan their Distinguished Lecturer. In 2008 and 2015 Planetizen named Dan as one of the 100 most important urban thinkers of all time.
