Background

The City of Smithville, Missouri, is situated along the Little Platte River and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. With a population of 10,249, the city has grown consistently since 1990. In 2019, Future iQ was contracted to facilitate the visioning process that produced the Community Vision and Strategic Action Plan for the community. Now complete, the Community Vision and Strategic Action Plan will serve as the foundational guide to the creation of a new Smithville 2030 Comprehensive Plan.

About the Project

Future iQ, in partnership with the planning firm Jon Stover & Associates (JS&A), have been contracted to guide the new comprehensive planning process for the City of Smithville.  The process will involve significant engagement with the community by means of Task Forces and public sessions and will specifically seek to include the youth voice. To provide continuity to the recent planning process, the Smithville 2030 Comprehensive Plan will center its planning elements around the five strategic pillars that emerged from the visioning and strategic planning process:

  • Continued commitment to education
  • Enhanced recreation and connectivity
  • Diverse housing and neighborhood options
  • Strengthened business and economic development
  • Retention of small-town feel and sense of community

The Smithville 2030 Comprehensive Plan will guide community decision-making for the next 10 years. The Plan will be a thoughtful, achievable and sustainable roadmap for community aspirations for the future.
