Economic Focus

Respondents were asked to respond to a question about Hilton Head Island’s economic focus. The question was: The economy on Hilton Head Island is driven by tourism, retirement and associated industries. This is strongly driven by the Island’s position and reputation as a world class resort destination and retirement destination. In terms of economic focus, how would you like Hilton Head Island to be in 2040?

Scale: 1= Maintain existing focus on tourism and retirement related industries; 10= Diversify the economy to help attract young professionals and ‘start up’ companies.

Key things to note:

  • The 10-50 year age groups were strongly orientated to the concept of diversifying the economy to help attract young professionals and ‘start up’ companies, with 80% leaning in this direction.
  • Those respondents not living in gated communities also leant heavily to the end of the continuum that focused on diversification of the economy.
  • Those respondents who self-identified as being most interested in ‘Economic and Industry issues’ also leant more heavily to the end of the continuum that focused on diversification of the economy.
